West Bengal Probing Pegasus
“The Pegasus issue has shaken the country since the 18th July, 2021 & there has been unrest in the country regarding its citizen’s privacy. There is an investigation by an international consortium that India is apparently resorting to phone hacking to target the politicians, journalists, activists & other people of significant social influence.
Now, West Bengal has become the first state in the country to launch an inquiry into the matter. Reports suggest that political strategist of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Prasant Kishor & TMC leader, Abhishek Banerjee are a few of the many victims of this phone hacking software, Pegasus.
So, the authorities of West Bengal have decided to look into the issue & investigate it thoroughly. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal & the leader of TMC has declared before leaving for Delhi, “The Cabinet has approved the appointment of a commission of inquiry comprising former Supreme Court judge, Justice MB Lokur & retired Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, Justice Jyotirmay Bhattacharya in the exercise of the power conferred by section 3 of the Commission of Enquiry Act, 1952 in the matter of widely reported illegal hacking, monitoring, putting under surveillance, tracking, recording, etc. of mobile phones of various persons in the state of West Bengal.”
The clash between the West Bengal State government & the Central government is nothing new or unforeseen. So, this order of probing into the matter by Mamata Banerjee may further create trouble but it is desirable if the State is allowed to carry on with the investigation without any backlash or the Central can itself launch an inquiry into the matter to reveal the ultimate truth.
