According to a nationwide survey of 5,000 people conducted in the UK, nearly 41% of adults have become overweight since the lockdown has begun in March 2020 due to the pandemic.
A nationwide survey was conducted in the U.K. that consisted of around 5,000 people & it was reported that the average weight gain was around 4 kg per person but all the stress-eating, ‘work-from-home’, inactivity has led to most of the people being overweight which seem threatening for the overall health of the nation.
The U.K. government is very worried about the obesity rate & is trying to implement ways to make people eat healthier & improve their nutritional status. The National Health Service (NHS) is providing various user-friendly apps & balanced diet plans to ease the process of getting fit.
The Chief Nutritionist of Public Health, England, Alison Tedstone has expressed concern over the increasing waistline & the decreasing health status of people of UK in an emailed statement, “The past 16 months have caused many to change their habits, it is not a surprise to see so many reporting weight gain.”
The NHS thinks the main contributing factors leading to the massive health negligence are frequent snacking, lack of any exercise or activity, isolation, binging on junk food throughout this long pandemic that has resulted in poor health of the people of the nation.
In May, the government initiated to limit junk food commercials on TV & decided that food chains should post the number of calories contained in their products. The government-led National Food Strategy requested the nation to impose taxes on sugar & salt & use the money to distribute free school meals & encourage better food & nutritional habits among deprived communities.
The problem of weight gain during this pandemic is not only limited to the UK but this is the story of every household in every part of the world. This pandemic has left us with no mental or physical energy to exercise or eat healthy. We are stress-eating most of the time & binging on our favorite show with a tub of ice cream which is devastating for our health. We have completely lost motivation to workout or stay fit & this, in turn, will not prove to be a satisfying experience.
So, the quicker we realize about keeping ourselves fit, the better it is!
